Aurora seeks backup plan for Gaylord project

Aurora, Colo., is trying to attract a developer for a proposed $824 million Western-themed hotel should Gaylord Entertainment Co. (NYSE: GET) decide against going forward with the project, the Aurora Sentinel reports.

Nashville-based Gaylord had proposed building an $800 million resort near Denver International Airport, but those plans have been impacted by Gaylord’s plans to sell its hotel brand to Marriott and to convert to a real estate investment trust.

For its part, Gaylord has said it is not walking away completely from its Colorado plans. In a recent earnings call, CEO Colin Reed said, “We will use the coming months to examine how the project can be completed with minimal involvement from the company through the development phase.”

The Aurora Economic Development Council and Gaylord executives have compiled information about the project’s size and scope and is sending that material to potential developers. Wendy Mitchell, president of the Aurora Economic Development Council, isn’t saying which developers she’s trying to get interested in the project.
